How to get your product recommended by ChatGPT: what 88 AI answers showed
You can't buy a ChatGPT recommendation, and OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed. What you can change is what ChatGPT reads about your product. This is what an audit of 88 AI answers about one pet-apparel brand showed, and what to fix first.
Where does ChatGPT get its product facts?
From the web, through its own crawler and through partners. OpenAI's help pages say that to be eligible for ChatGPT search, a site has to let the OAI-SearchBot crawler read it, and that ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers, including Microsoft and Shopify.1
For shopping answers, OpenAI lists the signals it uses: structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers, such as price and product description, plus other third-party content. Product results are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads.2 Merchants can send OpenAI a direct product feed, and for brands on Shopify the product data is already integrated through Shopify Catalog.2, 3
One more fact matters for brands on Amazon. Since November 2025, Amazon's robots.txt has blocked two of OpenAI's crawlers, ChatGPT-User and OAI-SearchBot, in addition to GPTBot.4 So the question for a marketplace brand isn't only "is my listing good." It's "which pages about my product can ChatGPT actually read, and what do they say."
What did one audit show?
In September 2026 I audited my own pet-apparel brand, Fabulous Fido, before changing anything: 88 answers across 9 AI tools, 49 of them to shopper questions that didn't name the brand. Full text is on record for 73 answers. The case with the findings and limits is published.
Three things stood out.
The listing is the brand's voice. Most answers with text on record (65 of 73) leaned on marketplace listings: Chewy, Amazon, Etsy. The brand's own site, then before launch, was cited in 12 of 73. Whatever a listing says, or fails to say, is what the AI repeats.
The shortlist is short, and concentrated. Six brands took 36% of all competitor mentions in the sample. An answer usually names two or three products, and the same few brands kept showing up across tools.
Near-identical names get merged. In one answer, an AI tool listed two versions of the same beanie and gave them different compositions, citing one listing for both. The cause isn't established, but the fix is: state the exact composition of every version and colorway, in listing text, on every channel.

Why does ChatGPT recommend a competitor instead?
The audit doesn't show why a competitor was picked over the brand in a given answer. It shows where the facts came from: listings. So the practical question is whether your pages give an answer engine something to quote. If your product's fiber content lives in one image, your sizing lives in a PDF, and your Etsy and Amazon titles describe two different products, there is little to work with, and the answer fills the gap with another brand.
There's also a simpler reason. If ChatGPT can't read your page at all, because the retailer blocks its crawlers or your own site does, then your product only exists for ChatGPT through third parties: reviews, roundups, other retailers.
What can you change?
Four things, in the order I'd do them for a marketplace brand.
- Be readable where ChatGPT reads. Your own site should allow OAI-SearchBot and have indexable product pages. Microsoft is a named search partner, so Bing's index matters, not only Google's. On Shopify, your catalog is already in ChatGPT; elsewhere, a direct product feed is OpenAI's route.1, 2
- One product story, everywhere. The same product name, the same materials, the same key specs on Chewy, Amazon, Etsy and your site. In the audit, answers quoted whichever listing they found. Give them the same facts to quote.
- Exact facts per version. If two versions differ in material, size or use, say so in the text of each listing. Text, not an image: text is what gets quoted.
- Measure before and after. Record what ChatGPT says today, change the pages, and ask the same questions again. AI answers vary between runs, so the comparison needs the same questions, the same tools and a date on each round.
What not to expect. No one can guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation; OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed and that product results aren't influenced by partnerships.1, 2 A third-party "AI visibility score" is that tool's own measurement, not something OpenAI publishes. What you control is the evidence: the pages about your product, and whether they agree with each other.
How to check what ChatGPT says about your product today
Ask the question a shopper would ask, without your brand name, in ChatGPT with search on. Note three things: whether you're named, which page the answer cites, and what it gets wrong. Do it for your top competitor's category question too. That's the baseline; everything else follows from it.
If you'd rather have it done for you: the free AI visibility check covers one product and three shopper questions in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Alexa for Shopping (formerly Rufus), by email within three business days. The full AI visibility audit is what produced the numbers above.
